The Sonoma Valley AVA (American Viticulture Area) is the birth place of California's commercial wine industry. Ten miles wide by forty miles long, Sonoma Valley is framed by the Mayacamas Range to the east, Sonoma Mountain to the west, San Pablo Bay to the south and Santa Rosa to the north. Like Napa, the city of Sonoma functions as the Valley's anchor supporting hotels, restaurants, shops, tasting rooms and commerce. Sonoma Valley is known for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in its cooler southern third, Bordeaux Varietals, Syrah and Zinfandel further north.
